District Commissioner For Merthyr Tydfil District
Kenneth long (ken) QFSM MSc GI Fire E  Scouting Roles: - District Commissioner Merthyr Tydfil - GSL 6th Merthyr - Mid Glam Queen Scout Award Coordinator  I have been a scout for nearly 51 years joining the scout section at 6th Merthyr Pentrebach at the age of 10 however, this group closed and I had to transfer to Treharris after only 2 years. Whilst in the Treharris troop I became a Patrol and Troop Leader and gained my Queen Scout Award at 18 whilst in Venture Scouts. At the same time I became the ACL and by the age 19 I also held the post of ASL at the same group. With the exception of a 3 month break, whilst in training to become a firefighter, I have been an active leader for over 40 years and have gained both the Medal of Merit and Silver Acorn. By the age of 21 I had become the SL at 4th Merthyr and concentrated solely on this role for 5 years during which I built up the troop and introduced two new leaders to the group. In 1982 I was approached, by the then DC to move to 6th Merthyr, as their SL had finished, which had reformed and was now based in my own village of Troedyrhiw.  This started my association with the group, which has lasted 34 years to date, I still hold the position of GSL, during which time there have been many highs. My early years however, were difficult as the troop had low numbers and we were constantly changing venues. By the mid eighties this had changed with troop numbers increased and two additional leaders’ success soon followed.  Our first Major success was being, the first National Winners of the British Breakfast Competition, which was followed up by the troop becoming the dominant force in all district competitions. At this time I became the acting ADCS a post I held until I became GSL at Troedyrhiw, I remained the SL whilst holding these posts. As the GSL I have been responsible for successfully raising over half a million pounds to purchase and develop the scout HQ along
with managing a highly successful youth programme and team of adult leaders and helpers. Along the way I have kept my youth leaders role initially as the SL and then in 1995 as the VSL / ESL. Since that time I have led 6 expeditions abroad and have helped 34 young people to gain their Queen Scout Awards. For the last 17 years I have also undertaken the role of DC and have experienced the highs and lows of managing a district of nine active groups to the current three. In this role I have had to deal with many issues including groups losing their sponsorship and or their HQ and the resulting closure of the group. I have also had the pleasure of managing three successful Gang Shows, two activity days, the Millennium and 2007 celebrations and have served as a Jamboree sub camp chief on two occasions. Topping these however, was the experience of managing the districts centenary celebrations in 2012, 12 high profile events and the production of a book on the history of scouting in Merthyr funded to the sum 10k by the Heritage Lottery.   In addition I hold the following:  - Form M summer conditions - Light Weight Camping Nights Away  - Archery GNAS Instructor - Sports Leader In my professional career I was a firefighter for 27 years serving in both the Mid Glamorgan and South Wales Brigades gaining the rank of Station Officer. During my time in the fire service I served operationally across the brigades and also became a specialist officer in fire safety, public relations, and fire safety education. Since 2002 I have been a regeneration officer for working on the Welsh Government’s Communities First Programme where I currently manage the South Merthyr Cluster. I have a Degree in Fire Engineering and a Masters in Science and have been awarded the Chief Fire Officers Commendation for Duty and the Queens Fire Service Medal for Service and Good Conduct.
